I am a fourth grade teacher in the High Desert in Southern California. I began teaching preschool 26 years ago. I left teaching to return to school after 5 years. During that time I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, left school to become well enough to start a family. After a few years I did in fact become a mother – and returned to school. Then my daughter was diagnosed with severe Sensory Processing Disorder at which point I left school AGAIN to focus on the needs of my daughter.
When my daughter was in fourth grade and my son started kindergarten I FINALLY returned to school. I earned my teaching credential in 2008. What a journey! Layoffs were happening, class sizes were increasing and jobs were as rare as blue diamonds. But I volunteered and substitute taught and kept reading, reading and reading to stay current.
I am about to being my fourth year as a full-time classroom teacher, and it is one of the biggest privileges and joys in my life. It required tenacity and grit to get here, and I share that journey with my students. I never would have succeeded without the kindness of my friends and husband who believed in my dream. Now, I am Believer-in-Chief for my students.
